Stepper motor spec for converting Super 8 projector

30 October 2015 - 10:25 AM

I'm on the cusp of buying the kit I need to convert a Super 8 projector for scanning.

I will either cannibalise my nice old Bolex (slightly reluctantly)  or buy a cheap ELMO, or something similar.

But assuming that the requirements for the motor will be similar across projectors, I wonder what torque I might need? And I can use a 200 step motor or would I need the more expensive 400 step motor for greater accuracy?

Thanks for any advice.

Tri-X as Negative processed in HC110

04 October 2015 - 01:34 PM

Photoshop levels applied to boost blacks, gentle low-pass filter added to increase sharpness.

Maybe my best Tri-X test so far, and a good alternative to the previous gritty Rodinal (APH09) look. I like the poetry in this frame. Out of focus, perhaps due to the fact it is a hand-held panning shot, made in haste whilst the sun broke through he clouds.

Of course HC110 is cheap and has a long shelf-life. My sealed glass bottles are now over 2 years old.

Note. Pan X in HC110 lacked compared to APH09, so this is a nice surprise.

Next up will be D19, later in the week, But maybe it will be hard to match this.

Pan X processed as neg. example

I ran TX in dilute APH09 dev. for 1 hour. Far too long, so tried a strip of Pan X for half the time. The grain is nice and the edge enhancement very apparent. I will repeat with TX.DSC_0084e.jpg

I read about it but was not sure it would happen, until I saw this on their site.

Lack of picture sharpness in my shots

06 September 2015 - 06:41 PM

Early on I switched to a Leicina Special for my Super 8 tests and never seem to be able to get sharp images. Recently I have been running tests in  Braun Professional. It seems to me that the same thing is happening.

When I see other people's footage I'm jealous of the sharpness.

Could it be another factor like the quality of the cartridge?

I am using a Wittner refillable cartridge. In this I put short lengths of Pan-X to test development and other experiments.

I see these people make a very sturdy looking refillable cartridge at quite a high price. Is it worth it?

Or do I need to check other factors, first?

Am I just very bad at focussing?
