About Me

Tyler Purcell is an Award-winning filmmaker, focused on storytelling through the visual medium. Tyler was a single child, growing up in the small town of Wellesley outside of Boston, MA. Even though his parents had no involvement in the entertainment industry, from a very young age all Tyler wanted to do was be a part of it. Initially his dad helped him build a little mock radio station, where he was the disk jockey. Eventually, he saved enough money from mowing the neighbors lawn, to buy a used Sears super 8 film camera and projector from a local yard sale. At the ripe age of 10, Tyler finally had the tools to make movies.

Over the next few years, Tyler would focus heavily on the visual medium, making short super 8 movies with his friends and family. It wasn't long before his dad convinced the local community access TV station to accept Tyler as their youngest volunteer ever. At the age of 12, Tyler sat in on his first training course, ready for the new challenge ahead. Tyler spent most of his time at the local community access station, which had moved one block from his residence not long after he joined. He eventually became the youngest (15 years old) director of live programming on the east coast and won several awards for his work at the station. At the same time, Tyler started working at Blockbuster video and watching a lot more movies. It was during this time, Tyler fell in love with the medium and directors like Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg, two of his favorites to this day.

Tyler's parents nurtured his involvement in the visual arts, sending him to creative arts camp during the summers until he was old enough to attend college. At 16 years of age, Tyler started his college adventure during the two summers before graduating from high school. He took filmmaking classes, so he would have the summers available to make his own productions using the schools professional filmmaking equipment. It was during this time he made his first short narratives; "The ID Project Revisited", "Elvis and Me" and "The Perfect moment". His passion for working with the medium of motion picture film, would drive the next 20 years of his life. Tyler graduated from Emerson College few years later and moved to Los Angeles almost immediately.

It took Tyler a decade of hard work before he officially made it into the industry. During which time, he worked all sorts of technical positions related to the industry, which helped him secure better jobs for more pay. It wasn't until a big break in 2010, editing a feature documentary for a friend, which set him off on the path to becoming a full-time freelance filmmaker. Since then, Tyler has edited, produced, shot and directed countless productions from short's to features. He loves micro-doc filmmaking, telling someone's story in less then 5 minutes. He also loves telling stories through the art of editing, which is how he pays his bills most of the time.

Outside of being a filmmaker, he is heavily involved in the celluloid movement, with his non-profit educational foundation; Celluloid Dreaming. He also teaches high school level filmmaking courses at LACHSA and lectures at local colleges. He also has two successful YouTube series and is constantly developing new content for those series and other series he helps with. Tyler is also an avid motorcyclist/former racing champion, certified scuba instructor and certified Apple computer technician. He believes diversity is the key to being successful and has tried to have the most diverse skill set possible.

Tyler currently lives in Van Nuys, California.
