How common is it for 1st ACs to have demo reels? Does it make more sense to have a list of equipment that you have worked with? (or both)

I've never heard of an AC with a demo reel for that capacity. Sounds like a queer idea... what would you put on it?

It's all about who you've worked with, what you've worked on and what gear you might have delt with.

It's mostly word of mouth recomendations.

I agree with all above posts.
I once saw a 2nd AC reel, however!
It was maybe 30 seconds of slates, one after another, of the different productions he worked on.
I hired him because I admired that kind of quirky initiative.
He's now a first AC.

I forgot that I posted this.

Oh good, I don't have to put together a reel! Although it would be amusing...I'm thinking, all my focus-pulls with slow-motion instant replays with voiceovers. "Now this one was tricky because I had to use my left hand and my wrist was at a funny angle. And of course I had gotten 3 hours of sleep the night before." Maybe some behind-the-scenes footage of me loading; this would naturally be after the part where I put the changing bag over my head to check for light leaks and stumble around flailing my arms. Then, a dramatic sequence of slate-claps with "Eye of the Tiger" in the background for emphasis.

I mean, if that doesn't get me a job, then I don't know what will...
