I just watched Post Tenebras Lux, shot by Alexis Zabé. On some shots he created a very strong halo effect around the subjects that I have never seen before. You can see some examples in the stills. Any ideas how he achieved that?

According to this analysis, he used a "bevelled" 25mm lens:

"..the outside of the lens is polished and shaved so it becomes flat, and then it creates a refraction. It was a 25mm lens, and it reacts differently depending on the light and atmosphere, as well as the camera movement.”
