Many are starting to entertain the idea of DIY film emulsions. To make one's own filmstock.

 

Certainly the results of such experimentation might be (or will be) "grungy" but such doesn't have to be a deterrent. One might find the grungy results extremely satisfying. I know I'd find such fascinating.

 

While not DIY filmstock, I did a workshop recently where we were printing onto clear 16mm film using a laser printer - basically just feeding the clear film through the printer where the ink (or whatever it's called) was deposited onto the film in the shape of the image sent to the printer. And the results were great. Grungy as all crap but just completely compelling. I'm sure a home made filmstock would be just as fascinating if not even more so.

I've been doing this a couple years now whenever a project comes up that works well with it - if you process it with Caffenol the results are pretty decent
