In Topic: How tk get better with Ronin S?

I have a Ronin S /A7III set up.. are you using the phone app.. you need to activate the whole unit with the app the first time you use it.. and you can then set about a million parameters in the app.. vital to use it.. for set up anyway.. you can change the default orientation of the joy stick to like a drone.. ie press up the camera tilts down.. press right camera goes left.. most people do this as its more intuitive.. use smooth track in the app to adjust pan/tilt speed/sensitivity/ and dead band ( how much you have to actually twist/move the handle before the gimbal will actually move.. set it low it moves with small amount of movement .. high it take move movement to make the camera move..  sports mode .. is Zero dead band .. when you get good you can custom set all the motors strengths if you want to..

There is also an auto tune function for the motors.. very handy . sets the strengths for the weight. and a balance test.. which wont auto balance it of course.. but it will tell you if you are really was off.. it has re do.. ok .. or excellent .. in the results ..

And there is a whole load of other stuff.. time lapse.. re mote.. and pre set moves ..

Its most likely not very useable without using the app .. it will just be the DJI presets..  you have to manually balance the whole thing as well of course.. this takes a bit of practice but not rocket science and easy to master in a few hours.. and stick to wide angle lens.. way more forgiving !

Go to the DJI site.. they have tutorial video,s on everything..  its a pretty good bit of gear.. motors are stronger than the M.. I found two handle operation is a lot easier..

In Topic: Principles to apply when you don't have much lighting control?

Mike .. I shot a  video for the anytime fitness chain last year ..in Tokyo .. as a small part of a shoot they were doing all around the world.. at their franchise gyms..  I share your pain.. and yes your location is a pretty tough one.. worse than I had to deal with..

First up I would say the most important think is the brief your client gave you.. what is the look they want.. you can shoot it beautifully in a dark moody way, all close up and slo mo... but I can almost guarantee the client won't like it.. beware switching off the over heads unless you have big arse lights to re create daylight.. they nearly always want bright.. they want at least a few wide shots and they will want to see all the expensive machines.. I could well be wrong ,maybe they want dark/moody..but I would really make sure your clients expectations are firmly footed in reality ..the purpose of the video is to get customers in the door rather than footage for our showreels :).. unfortunately!!.. so I would really make sure they know exactly the limitations of the location ,control you have over the people there.. eg I wouldn't just rely on the paying punters .. have a few "models" that look good and you have control over and will be there all day..and will sign a release form !..

In summary..really nail down your clients expectations.. and how they want it to look..make them aware of the limitations  if their expectations are not obtainable .. we always want dark and moody.. clients always want flat bright and smiley .. :) their purpose is solely to get customers in the door..

I hate to argue and I don't have an Amira here to weigh, but the Ursa Mini Pro is about five pounds, and the Amira is over nine, both without viewfinder. It's almost half the weight, and I would strongly suspect that Arri's viewfinder is heavier.

Both cameras actually have pretty similar power consumption, mainly because they're both based on programmable logic. In my view this is not really acceptable in either case and people using programmable logic in portable equipment need to get a handle on power consumption before the next generation appears and it's even worse.

Yes was going to say.. Ive never picked up the UMP.. but Ive seen them at trade shows.. and they don't look anything like the weight of a Panzer armorer plated Arnold Richter Scope beast..  :)

In Topic: Program wot I shot.. on Nat Geo UK

14 February 2019 - 08:20 PM

Isn't that something. You shoot the project and can't see your work. Sad.

Were you prepared for the bugs or was it a learn on the job thing?

I usually get DVD,s well these days video files of the programs after they have aired .. this was a long series (I didn't shoot all of it) and Nat Geo stuff can take along time to air.. and it still has to go out in the US.. but the trailer they often share.. but as lawyers take over US tv that is getting harder too..!.. but thats very standard you don't get any copies till everything has aired.. Actually when Murdoch took over Natgeo..within days.. I got an email from Vimeo that I had two illegal non permission clips on my showreel Vimeo account.. and they have a 3 strike policy.. so one more and Im banned for life !! WTF!!. I had actually had 3 clips from Natgeo shoots that I had shot and the UK production company had said I could use on my reel, they had been on there for a couple of years ... I pleaded with Vimeo to give me the contact of the person who had made the claim.. no surprise Fox lawyers..naively I thought I could talk some sense into this lady .. I told her I had personally shot the clips.. they were only like 30 seconds and not complete scenes etc.. and there must be some misunderstanding.. and I had another clip from that series that their Bots hadn't found on the same reel..  really nasty women.. she didnt care and then threatened me regarding the 3 rd clip.. !! in the end I took down the other clip if she would rescind on the claim to Vimeo.. and I could get my 2 strikes back and regain a no strike status with Vimeo.. what's that joke.. the similarity between lawyers and sperm.. one in 3 million has the chance of being a human..

The bugs ! yes I have shot for the same series "Nazi Mega structure s" before.. you invariably end up in some dark underground bunker .. there was one very valuable lesson I learnt.. on an early shoot as I was walking in this big tunnel. I felt something land on my head.. not really sure what it was I just instinctively brushed the top of my head with my hand..   a HUGE .. centipede hit the floor.. and I mean Alien like.. I jumped a mile and let out a huge scream.. later I pondered the prospect that had the timing been even half a second different ,that thing could have gone down the back of my shirt !!! .. wear a hoodie.. !! never lean on the walls.. tuck trousers into socks.. if you just even think you saw something move.. it probably did.. move away !.. I mean there is nothing that's going to kill you in these tunnels in Japan .. but you can get pretty ill from a bite from some them.. and I really hate big insects !!
