Hi! 

 

I recently got back my first scanned 35mm footage from the lab. i have never worked with DPX files before, yet with scanned film, does anyone have any tips on how to go ahead? i have both Premiere and DaVinci Resolve.

If your system can handle the throughput, you can just import them into Resolve and they behave like any other clip. But DPX files are huge and require large, fast drives. Depending on the resolution and bit depth, you could need disks that can reliably move data at 500MB/s or 1500MB/s - lots of factors at play. 2k 10bit DPX isn't too bad - not a lot bigger than uncompressed HD Quicktime files, really. 

 

If you're having playback issues, you might want to look into using proxies then relinking media later. with resolve, this is easiest if the proxies are in the same file format (so a lower resolution DPX sequence). You can make it work with ProRes files, but it's a little more difficult to relink.

Dont process the files in Adobe premier, use After Effects or Resolve to break them up into editing dalies or prores masters. IIRC Premier will spit them all out at 8bit, so if you decide to stay with your prores files or DNxHR files for finishing you'll have lost alot of color information
