I am reading American Cinematographer, and in the article for Jarhead, it mentions that for the oil fields sequence, Deakins' crew built him a "large black cyc that had a slightly greyer horizon line". Does anyone know what that is, because I'm having trouble picturing it. Thanks.

A cyc is just a large screen of a certain color, sometimes, white, black or a color used for chroma keying. In this case, it was, as it says, black with a slightly lighter "sky" to simulate the sky. It sounds like a dumb idea until you see it with the great clouds of smoke and the contrast the fires lend. With all that in the scene, your eyes don't think anything of it.
