HDV aspect ratio Help !

Hi

the manual for the Sony HDV Z1 claims is it 1440 x 1080 16 x 9...but when you do the math:

1440 / 90 = 16

1080 / 90 = 12

which gives a ratio of 16 x 12 aka 4 x 3...

can someone please explain how 1440 x 1080 resolution is 16 x 9 ?

The pixels aren't square, but the pixels on the HD monitor are, so 1440 x 1080 becomes 16x9 once the pixels are displayed as square.

It's the same reason why 16x9 NTSC is still 720 x 480, just like 4x3 NTSC (and you'll notice that 720 x 480 isn't exactly 4x3 either if you do the math.)
