Hi,

First off, please don't use odd fonts and formatting on this board - it's pretty distracting.

Your question is very broad. There are many great books on the subject you should read, and you should look around to see if there's any way you can get involved in filmmaking in your area - although this is harder in some parts of the world than others. You should do this at any level you can, from being a runner on professional productions to working for free on independent or student projects. Of course, you could also consider film school, but that depends very much on your circumstances.

As I say, the question is really too broad to answer fully on an internet forum, but feel free to stick around and contribute here, especially if you have any more specific questions - it's another important part of learning.

Phil

You've taken the crucial first step and that is... calling yourself "D.O.P."

The rest just takes a couple of days.

off the top of my head, with no sarcasm...

learn still photgraphy (on film, not digital).

learn the zone system.

shoot short films on a video camera and edit them yourself.

read books on cinematography.

watch great films.

shoot more short films on a video camera and utilize what you learned.

read american cinematographer magazine to learn what kind of extensive resources are utilized to make hollywood films look so good.

shoot more shorts, on film, and try to use simplified and/or less expensive impersonations of the labor/money intensive techniques you read about in the magazine. repeat the last five steps over and over.

hope this helps,
jaan

Good luck, dude.

If you ARE gonna hang around, do us the courtesy of adding your actual name to your posts and you might also consider changing your handle to "student" from "Director of Photography". Like with artists, you're only an artist after someone ELSE says you're an artist.

I shot for two weeks in upper Egypt under protection of a military convoy. Quite an experience. Then we went to Moqattam, or "garbage city" a city built into the biggest trash dump I've ever seen:

It was like being on another planet. That night we went and shot an actual exorcism by the local Christian bishop. I won't soon forget that trip.
