It seems like the HD cable channels are showing a new Kubrick transfer every other week. The latest is "Paths of Glory". This excellent transfer shows that in 1957 Kubrick already had a unique eye for visuals and framing, shooting wider angle than most filmmakers of the time. It's in 4x3 pillarbox, and most likely framed for that aspect ratio.

If anyone fooled with the 4x3 frames of Paths of Glory then legions of Kubrick fans would show up with torches & pitchforks. It is a gorgeous (and otherwise excellent) film.
