Has anyone heard anything about a release date for The Conformist on DVD? Last I heard (which was quite a while ago), Paramount had put the film on thier "to release" list, but I haven't heard a peep since. Perhaps they're waiting for HD DVD or Blu-ray?

It's pretty depressing that one of the most visually stunning films of all time is only available on a Pan & Scan Laserdisc...

I remember back in the last days of laserdisc when Paramount announced upcoming letterboxed releases of "Reds" and "The Conformist", new widescreen transfers which actually appeared on cable TV (I have an old VHS tape of the letterboxed, restored version of "The Conformist" that Storaro did, that aired on Bravo, I believe).

Since then, no word from Paramount on either release.

Vittorio was involved in remastering "Reds" and "One From The Heart" about 3 years ago, although I don't know what became of those new masters.

As far as new Storaro DVDs, I just watched a stunning transfer of The Fifth Cord which was recently released. Here are some screen caps:

Also on my list of DVDs to watch is another Storaro giallo called The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Dario Argento's first film as a director.

It wouldn't let me edit my last post, all of those screen caps are from The Fifth Cord.

Wow! Never seen the Fifth Cord, and based on those pics I'm buying the DVD right now.

That's a bummer about the Conformist. At the moment I would be happy with a non-dubbed letterbox tape, but even that would take an act of congress to obtain... everywhere I look it's that pan-scan vhs. I want to slap Paramount. ;)
Storaro pulls of fantastic compositions (as shown above) and it's a crime to crop those frames!!!

I got ahold of a decent bootleg DVD of "The Conformist" off of Ebay, pretty good transfer that's letterboxed with English subtitles. It's the best video copy I've seen of it and it was less than $20. Nice stills from "The Fifth Cord", I'm interested to take a look at it.

The video to DVD transfer I got off ebay is pretty bad. 4:3 pan and scan with distortion in the soundtrack. $14, only if you have to have it.

I also have some old VHS of The conformist and I'm really waiting that one one on dvd. Just saw Bertolucci's Sheltering Sky last week and the cinematography was stunning.

Haven't even heard of The Fifth Cord. Looks like Franco Nero is starring in that one. Nice! The Bird With The Crystal Plumage is one of my favourite giallo's out there. Profondo Rosso, Suspiria and Tenebrae are also good.

I saw 'The Conformist' today, it was playing in Greenwich. It's always nice to see such a film on the big screen, where it belongs.
