Has anyone actually had the experience of not being paid for a gig and then discovering they were having difficulty proving they actually did work for that client on a particular day?
One editing client of mine told me that one time a non-paying company had actually claimed in court that they had already paid and the only thing that saved the day was a copy of the check. It seems the non paying company, upon getting the canceled check back, had written in additional information on the check to make it look like they had paid for a day of work that was now being challenged as being unpaid for.
If my editing client had not brought the copy of the check that revealed no such wording on the SAME check, they probably would have lost their small claims court case!
How do you counterclaim if a client claims you never did work for them?
