I thought I could match 2 SDX900's by taking my SD card out and reading the same file onto the rental camera. Both cameras were in preset, same setting on filter wheel. Skin tone did not match. I then white balanced each camera and everything was perfect. Shouldn't they have matched in the preset mode?

Hi,

Preset is just a white balance made at the factory & can be changed by somebody fiddling!

With a vectorscope it would be easy enough to adjust the two cameras to match in preset mode. As stated, a preset can be, well, reset.

In an ideal world, the two cameras with the same settings (and same lenses), would match.

But even with matched settings, variances emerge due to age, use, etc. in lenses, sensors, prisms, and, filter wheel filters, you'll generally need to do some sort of color adjustment to make them match, which means either white balancing, or using a waveform vectorscope.

This isn't a trait unique to any particular camera.
