Greetings,

I was sent to this site by a DP friend and it seems to have a wealth of info! I have worked with camera departments on features, shorts & TV serving as AC on 5 features and DP or Operator on over 30 short (personal/student) projects.

I filled many roles on sets before focusing on camera department. I've been an Assistant in Texas for about a year and now I've started working in LA from Inglewood. I'd like advice on a couple things:

1 -Where to find paying work in LA (or beyond)
So far I have just been surfing the wasteland of craig's list where 99% of the gigs are no-pay. I have done many low/deferred gigs in TX and I understand that it is sometimes a necessary way to network but I need to make a living. Where can I find the real listings?

2 -What do do between jobs in LA
Any suggestions? I'd like to keep learning about cameras and equipment on down time. Don't some camera houses offer free seminars? Anybody willing to teach me to load 16 & 35 mags?

I'd love to assist any of you LA DPs or 1st ACs as a Camera Assistant (HD) or Camera Utility/Trainee (film) in order to gain experience. I usually 2nd AC & run monitors for SD & HD projects. If a production is unable to offer pay, I may be available to come by and assist the team for a couple days at expenses only.

Onward-

Just as a follow-up:

I have secured several more LA jobs now through craig's list & mandy (one even pays a rate!). I'm packing 4 shoots into a week in order to meet more filmmakers. Some of the guys are working pros, which is nice. Hoping to get on some of their paying gigs in the future.

If this thread remains cold I may repost on the AC section. Is that ok? I'm new the this forum...but I did read the rules :)
