I am a bit surprised about Allen Daviau , getting this award ? . anyone agree ? John Holland ,London.

I'm not that familiar with his work and looking at his credits it doesn't exactly contain films that I'm dying to see either. Who knows what selection criteria the ASC uses, but yes, he does seem a bit less influential than past recipients of the award. Since they are handing out this award every year, I guess there comes a point when you're struggling to find cinematographers who have been around long enough to qualify.

IMO Daviau is well deserving of this award based on the quality of his work alone and not just because he's been working for several decades. Max, I believe you're doing yourself a major disservice by not watching Daviau's work on films like "Bugsy", "The Color Purple", " and Empire of the Sun" .

I agree. And let's not forget "Avalon" and the beautifully photographed "Fearless."

To my mind, he has been Spielberg's best reoccuring DP, but I can't help but feel the award is uncomfortably premature. 64 years old is far too young, not in the lifetime category.
