hi all i have heard someone say that when a camera pans from (left to right or right to left......one of these two)...or when it is a dolly movment....ther is a slight strobing of the image ?
is it true....does it happen in all motion cameras ?
is this somehting relatedd to the shutter mirror.....in arri 3 the shutter is different from the arri 435 where it is butterfly type i think.....
has it been avoided in the arri 435 cameras?!
thanks and cheers!!

It has to do with the fact that 24 fps is not really fast enough to create smooth motion. Too few motion samples per second to look perfectly continuous, hence why fast motion strobes.

There used to be a rough formula in the old ASC manual on how fast you were supposed to pan at certain speeds, but I can't recall for the life of me what they were. It is a problem in certain cases when your pan isn't fast enough or slow enough.

This down load from Vantage Film has recommended panning speeds for anamorphics.

Halving the focal lengths ought to adapt it for spherical lenses.
