I don't know if its the best but "The Amateur Photographer's Handbook" by Aaron Sussman is very comprehensive and in-depth for intro-mid-level book. It is out of print and some what dated, but it covers everything from light, optics, composition, developer formulas, printing, etc, also has some old interesting techniques that most new books don't cover. I have heard that "Basic Techniques of Photography - An Ansel Adams Guide", by John P Schaefer is also very good.

'the photographers guide to light' by nigel hicks is one of my favorites, also all of the ansel adams books even though they are a bit outdated still full of great information. the camera, negative, print ansel adams books were the first i read about photography and they are important if you care to shoot and develope your own b&w and learn about the zone system other than that kinda useless.

The Camera, THe Negative and The Print, by Ansel Adams, are absolutely superb and I would not call them out of date. The whole thrust of the trilogy is about how to get your visualisation of a photograph into a print.

Whilst it is all focused on traditional monochrome phtography, I find that the critical thing is that it is analagous to other areas of photography.

However I would not recommend them to anyone who does not already have a good basic knowledge of photography.
