Animorphic telecine?

It seems like shooting anamorphic would be a better way to get 16:9 aspect ratio than filing the gate and having to guess what's in frame while shooting. Can telecine machines unsqueeze the anamorphic image?

Yes most can, Mk3 turbo ranks, ursa, Shadow, spirit etc. can all deal with anamorphic footage.

Anamorphic Super 8 is unsqueezed on a computer afterwards.

That makes sense, Matthew. You unsqueeze it by simply altering the aspect ratio of the digitized file. Now, which anamorphic lens is best suited for getting close to 16:9? Are they all super wide?

Since I don't own a 16:9 TV, what happens to a 4:3 image on one of those?

Now, which anamorphic lens is best suited for getting close to 16:9? Are they all super wide?

You can use one with factor of 1.33, it turns your 4:3 frame to 1.772:1 very close to the 16:9 format (1.778:1).
There are different compression factors for anamorpic attachments like 1.25, 1.33, 1.42, 1.5, 1.75 or 2.0

Based on the 4:3 Frame:
1.25 --> 1.66:1
1.33 --> 1.77:1
1.42 --> 1.89:1
1.5 --> 2:1
2.0 --> 2.66:1

I think this is the most logical way to shoot Super-8 for transfer to HD. What kind of screw on "lenses" are available for squeezing the image vertically then expanding it horizontally when transferring to HD?
