Merging Sound with the Final Product

I'm real new to this so forgive this primitive question. I am beginning to understand that you film silent with a camera that can be connected to some sort of recording device in order to synchronize the sound with the picture. So then you end up with a bunch of picture film and another bunch of sound on either tape or some digital media.

What is the process of getting from this to the Final product which I assume is a film with a magnetic sound strip containing the soundtrack that can be played through a sound projector. I also assume that the final merging of the sound to the finished product occurs after the film has been edited into it's final configuration. Is this right?
