3D tracking (or matchmoving) is the process of tracking movement from 2D plates and calculating the move into a 3D move. The output from matchmoving is a virtual camera that matches the movement of the real camera used on set.

It's used when you need to match CG elements into 2D plates, as the virtual camera that renders out the CG will match the position, rotation, focal length, film back, etc of the real camera that was used to shoot the scene.

Survey of the set/location will also be used to help solve the 3D move. The survey information can be as minimal as writing down the height of the camera, the focal length and placing a few tracking markers in the shot. And knowing the size of the film gate helps as well.

Boujou and 3DEqualiser are the main two programs used in the VFX industry.

If your looking for some reading on the subject, this book is quite a good primer...

And here's a free tracker called voodoo... I've only tested this out once, I think it gave me a good solve - I can't remember.
