The protective mesh and scrims it came with seem to heat up and smoke. Is that normal?

Hmmm, could just be some acrylic coating or something to protect the metal until it's been put to use.

To avoid a smoky or smelly set, you might just wanna run the lights for a while in a well ventilated area to burn all that stuff off.

Otherwise, it's not a big deal...unless the wiring inside the light is smoking! he he

New scrims tend to smoke a little and smell bad until whatever oils and whatnot left on them burn off. Of course, smoke coming from inside the light itself is a bad sign...

Thats what I thought, too. The lights are fine. The smoking stopped when I took the scrims off. Thanks. I'll let it run for a few minutes until it stops smoking. It'll take a while, as there are four scrims and three protective meshes. Anyone know of a way I can wipe the coating off?

David id right, residue from the manufacturing process. Probably petroleum based, a soak in dish detergent or de-greaser, 409, Fantastic, Oil-Eater should do. Rinse them and then dry quickly in from of a fan or in a warm oven.
