Sound fx recording

I was wondering what the best device would be for doing on location recording of sound fx and voice. I want something highly portable that will not require the use of a laptop and an audio interface such as an mbox. I want to be able to hook up XLR based microphones to the device if possible and I'm not sure if they also provide phantom power.

I'm obviously new to the sound side of things so any tips would be great.

Your post doesn't mention budget, which is a big factor in any gear recomendation. That said, one of the best boxes you could get for this is the Sound Devices 744T hard disk recorder. www.sounddevices.com

I've been using it for a couple of years for field recording, and it is truly great at what it does. It is used by many of the audio big guns in Hollywood for FX recording, as well as for dialog.
