what does "key link" mean?

i overheard the d.p. on a commercial ask the producer whether the lab or telecine had "key link." help me out.

I'm not sure if that's exactly the right term (I've heard of the Aaton and Arri "link" versions) -- basically it's a reader in the telecine that either reads the Arricode/Aatoncode (time code) that was burned into the neg for "instant" syncing with dailies. See:

We have two, I generally thought that Keylink was the Aaton brand name for their Keycode reading system. As opposed to say an Everetz keycode reader.

That's basically correct. The Aaton Keylink system involves both hardware and software to read keycode and various timecodes, generate database files (FTL, Flex), and insert various windows on the video image. It also can sync sound when used with an Aaton Indaw recorder and software options.
