What kind of smoke machine do you use to get good volumetric lighting? I've been doing my own low-budget shoots using a cheap water-based smoke machine (something you would use at a halloween party) to create some atmosphere in a scene. The smoke does not hang in the air creating the shafts of light that I would like.

What type of smoke machine would do this?

A cracked oil machine or a hazemaker. They're readily available for rent at any lighting house.

Legalities vary from country to country on this.... many places will not allow cracked oil now as it leaves a residue.

Cant beat an Artem but dont burn the place down......

you want a hazer, not a fogger. you might be able to create it using a pro fogger on the lowest volume setting and letting it run continuously. but a Hazer is what you want. LeMaitre makes a great hazer as does Martin and MDG. your local Rocknroll lighting rental place should have one.
