All of this stuff is from a selection of NYU shorts that I shot over this past academic year. Weaknesses? Constructive criticism is welcome.

Hi John,

I must say that's an impressive reel for a 22 year old, learn all that at NYU ? I'll be watching for your name in the majors.

Good luck,

Kieran.

Kieran,

Thanks, I learn from this forum, books, AC magazine and from experience. I haven't taken any cinematography courses at NYU yet; I'm just finishing my second year. I'm worried because I failed two classes this term, but it was because I shot seven student shorts--one every weekend for the last two months. I think it was worth it though; I learned a lot.

NYU doesn't offer as much as I'd like in terms of cinematography classes. I'm trying to find an apprenticeship for a working DP this summer.

Your 22?! Yeesh I turned 25 last week and I wish I had the quality of shots in my reel you've got in yours.

Great music, excellent selection of shots - none of them feel weak or unnecessary. My only concern is the reel begins with a lot of black and white and continues like that for the 1st 1/3, and i wonder if thats a little problematic in this day and age.

But as I said already, excellent stuff.

John,

Looking at your reel I'd be cautious of what cinematography courses you could take, you might be disappointed by the entry level.
You're in the right city for a decent DP that's what I'd go for, there's no substitute for working on a crew, looking at how you handle the
camera you should get 2nd AC no bother maybe even pull focus on a smaller crew. I'm going to sound like your dad now, but you have to
watch your work at college, there is no better safety net than a degree ( well there is but I'm assuming your not a millionaire ) and cinematography will always be there a college education wont!

Didn't mean to lecture John,

Good luck

Let us know how you get on in the summer.

Kieran.
