Paul Thomas Anderson (Dir) and Robert Elswit (DoP) crafted some nearly transcendent shots in Magnolia (1999).

Below are some DVD screen caps of my favorite shots.

Any insight into these shots by professional cinematographers will be greatly appreciated.

I really enjoy his films as well. that camera pushing in on details and back out during lateral moves following the action is ripped right out of scorsese!

scorcese? how do you spell that?

Why don't we just talk about the movie and bring up relevant stills as needed to illustrate detailed points?

That is a good idea, Jon.

Below are the shots I am most interested in and specific questions I have about them.

Posted Image
Are there any other movies that include water dripping onto the camera?
What is causing the light from the flashlight to cascade?

Posted Image
Is there a name for this blurring effect seen mostly on the bottom left?
How is this effect created?

Posted Image
How difficult would this shot be to set up?

Could a moderator please delete post #5 in this thread, and then this post?

I am still seeking responses and the thread is kind of messy.

Thanks
