When you use diffusion gels for film (frost, black diffusion, white, etc) to get the desired look, do you expose for the light at key value and then put the gel on? Or shoud you expose for the light with the gel already on?

Thanks

Diffusion can add somewhat of a certain 'look' to an image, but the big factor is the amount of light output it cuts down. Therefore if you were to meter your subject without the diffusion, and then shoot at that stop with the diffusion on, your final result is going to be dimmer. If you want to ensure correct exposure with your light meter, do so with the diffusion on, unless you have memorized how much light will be lost from diffusion and just compensate when you set your stop on the camera.
