is it posible to connect my lacie 200gb external hard drive to my camera (sony hvr-v1u) via I-link connection? I know the wire is available to join the two for $16.00 I heard you can record uncompressed direct into the lacie but I dont know? if theres anybody out there that can answer this question that would be great! im sure its going to be a common one if its not already! Thanks!

You can't just plug a camera into a firewire drive or external hard drive without some sort of processor to convert and label the video signal into files. This is usually why there is a computer inbetween the camera and the hard drive, or you are using a special drive (like FireStore) that does its own processing.

There is an HDMI-out on the camera that sends out 4:2:2 uncompressed HD. You may need an HDMI-to-HDSDI converter to go to certain devices like an HD deck.

Phil Rhodes here wrote an article for Showreel magazine about creating your own data recorder set-up.
