HI!!

you mean the "sepia" dirty grainy mood?

is a combination of stock and telecine color correction just that, its no difficult to do that. ask your DP!!

If you have to do it in camera, then a contrast-increasing process like skip-bleach neg or cross-processed reversal combined with a Tobacco or Sepia filter on the camera (or even a Coral or strong warming filter would probably work.)

What are the benefits other than cost of using the filters in camera as opposed to adding the effect in post?

Less noise from pushing the color channels heavily in one direction. Not that Soderberg was probably worried about noise.

Of course, the same problem happens if you use the heavy filter and decide to remove the effect in post -- noise from pushing the color channels the other direction.

Also, "brown" is a somewhat difficult color to create in a color-correction suite.
