Is it still true that in some circumstances of being in film school and making a film with the schools cameras , equiptment and what not. Is the filmaker still liable for not being able to take their film and sell it themselves for profit. I have heared this in an outdated book.

This is a legal question. I faced it at school as well. At my school I found out that they have the right to use it for promoting the school, but don't own it. Check with your dept. director, and reliable professors. If you fear anything may happen but this is your only opportunity to make a film ever then just do it, or find someone willing to buy in on your idea/script. If you have a good shot a making it outside of school take it.
