Hi guys, i want to confirm something with you guys. When using a generator that has a limit of 60KVA, does that mean that i can draw 60,000w from it?

thanks

Its a 60,000W Genny, but try not to ever draw a full load off a generator, its bad for it. It will probably over heat if its hot out before you even get to a full load.

i heard about the rule that 0.8xKVA = KW
so off a 60kva genny, you should draw a maximum of 48kw as far as i know!

If you're running tungsten only and don't try to turn everything on at once then a generator with a rating equal to the load should be okay. If you're running a lot of HMI with magnetic ballasts then it probably is a good idea to derate the generator to 80% or so. This is all about the load's power factor rating, that's basically an indication of how much power is wasted (not exactly but do you REALLY want to get into a discussion of Complex Algebra as it relates to Alternating Current?).

Generators are like heavy duty trucks, the good ones will pull their maximum load for days without any problem. I personally rent generators from Aggreko whenever possible. If I was in one of the production centers like NY or LA I'd probably have alternate sources but out here in the Heartland they're the only generator company I trust.
