What's Cheese Plate?

I've never heard this term before but I'm guessing it's a plate that allows you to attach multiple pieces of equipment to?

It's a piece of metal w/ a lot of holes in it :rolleyes:

Actually, it's used mostly for car rigs. Cheese plate attaches to hood mount (or hostess tray), ball-levelling head attaches to cheese plate, camera attaches to ball levelling head. Or, you can put the camera's dove-tail plate right on to the cheese plate, but you can never quite get two holes to line up ...

BTW, the holes are 3/16".
