Since I'm not gonna be shooting sound anyway, what are the features in the XLS that would be worth spending more money on? Thanks.

I haven't handled an 814 XL but I own an XLS.
From the specs the XLS will give you 24 fps and intervalometer at least. Also more likely to be quieter and a few years newer. Those could be important, depending... Your call.

Also, 814XL is part of an earlier "family" of Canon super8 cameras. 814 (and 1014) XLS was part of a redesign? Which is better? I have had good experience with both families.

I think the main advantage you get is that the XLS has a wider shutter angle, making it more useful in low light situations. I've used the 1014 XL and 1014 XLS, and if I was to go for a canon again, I'd strongly advise/definitely take the XLS route

One problem with an unadjustable XL shutter can be excessive motion blur. I certainly noticed it going from a 180 to a 220 degree shutter. You do have to be aware of it.
