I've always known Panavision camera's to be the only ones to have the behind the lens filter because of their flange depth, but recently a couple people told me the Arri 535B can employ a behind the lens filter. Does anyone know if this is true.

Any camera can have a behind the lens filter. Bolex was doing it before there was a Panavision. The thing is that whatever lens is used has to be collimate for use with a behind the lens gel filter as the filter increases the flange focale depth optically about .0015". Doesn't sound like much but it wreaks havoc with wide angles and speed lenses.

The other thing is that with Panavision the filter space is farther away from the film plane, so more imperfections can be gotten away with- with Arri it is so close- you put it in the gate- that your filter needs to be totally 100% clean. I know plenty of people who don't bat an eye doing it with Panavision, but won't touch the thing with Arri. It's just too close for comfort.

I think the Arri 535 "filter" slot is actually in the gate itself, so it's pretty much useless for filters, only hard mattes. The Panavision design has the gel slot farther from the gate, so there is less chance of imperfections coming into focus, though it's still something to watch for.
