Kodak 16mm film stock - need urgent advice!!

Hi,

Im looking to buy Kodak 16mm film stock very soon and need advice from anyone who has tested various types from Kodak.

At the moment, i'm not sure what type of Kodak stock is best for what I want. I want saturated colour ( im thinking of the vibrant, hot, saturated colours of 'Fallen Angels' by wong kar wai) and it also needs an ASA suitable for fairly low-lit night shots (needs to pick up light from only existing light sources such as room lamps & ambient light on city walkways from neon shop signs). The interiors for night scenes will also only use existing light - just a single tungsten bulb or fluorescent tube as the only source.

For day shots, I want a slightly washed-out look with a cooler colour palette of light blues and greys. Only natural light used again - NO extra lighting.

I really like Vision 2 500T for night shots, but will the high sensitivity of this stock mean that my shots for day-time scenes will be too overexposed that they are unworkable? Does anyone know of another Kodak stock/s they could recommend for the type of visual look I've mentioned? I need a good starting block with a reliable stock before considering post-prod processes...

Christopher Doyle uses Fuji stock on Kar Wai's films. Any reason why it has to be Kodak?

500T is great for night exteriors, especially if you have a faster lens to work with. Should be fine if you're using minimal lighting.

For the day scenes, if you're shooting in direct sunlight, 500T will definitely be too sensitive. Probably an f/stop of 45 or so. But since you're going for cooler and washed out, you could probably do well with 200T, uncorrected with a polarizer just to give yourself more room to manipulate your f-stop.

However, if you're specifically going for a certain type of Doyle image. You should shoot Fuji. They have a nice 500T stock and there's the new Fuji "Vivid" 160T which I've been dying to use :)

Kodak VISION2 stocks are lower in contrast and less saturated than the previous VISION1 stocks. Nowadays, a 500T stock like 7218 works well for all purposes, but if you want saturated colors and still use low-light levels, you could also try the old 7279, which may be a bit grainer but it's also more contrasty. People like Janusz Kaminski ("War of the Worlds", "Munich") and Phil Meheux ("Casino Royale") still prefer it over the newer stocks.

For washed out and cool exteriors, by adding NDs, you can use it without the 85 filter to get bluish tones and desaturate it in post (telecine or DI).

Thanks for your help Jonathan - yeah, I was enquiring about Kodak because I was applying for Kodak sponsorship whilst studying. But after all that, I've decided to go with Fuji which was what I had my eye on intially - I'll definetely try out Vivid 160T whilst testing out their different stocks! :) Cheers
