Okay, having a little dilemma here and would like to ask some advice.

Just took delivery of an Arriflex 2C that is really in nice shape. It has a PL mount and because of a miscommunication (the difference between full frame and full aperture, which still boggles me) I thought it was going to have a full aperture gate (24.89mm x 18.67mm), when in actuality it has an Academy aperture gate (22mm x 16mm).

I plan on buying a Cinematography Electronics crystal base for the camera and a couple of Arriflex 3 400ft mags. I will keep the camera serviced and in top notch shape and use it for personal projects, which I will be shooting 1.85 with the Academy aperture gate, but I was also hoping to rent the camera and myself (as operator) for second unit/B camera MOS work.

My question is, will I be hurting myself with the Academy aperture gate, as opposed to a full aperture gate? The PL mount is centered on the Academy aperture, and there is not a ground glass available for the 2C that would show the full aperture gate area. So is having a full aperture gate really going to benefit me or be a benefit to someone who may want to rent the camera for B roll?

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Tim

Honestly, you're only going to ever get a little business renting out a 2c, even for 2nd unit. Most cameras that it will sub with will likely be the same academy gate, or frankly you'll be shooting something for video finish so it just won't matter much.
