Very sad news.
Emilio Ruiz del Rio was the world's foremost exponent of the foreground miniature composite. He would physically align scale models of background scenery in front of the camera and use force perspective tricks to enhance sets and locations. He was also a master of the foreground glass shot (the same technique but with 2D artwork) and cut out, painted matte art.
Ruiz handled the foreground model/glass shots on numerous films, mainly Spanish (including the recent PAN'S LABYRINTH) as well as a bunch of Dino Dellaurentis Hollywood movies in the 1980s such as DUNE and RED SONYA. Check out this awesome website that features photographs of before and after effects shots:
I really hope someone out there continues to keep these ingenius techniques up their sleeve. As the work of Ruiz was all done in-camera, original negative, it would always be the ultimate for compositing scenery.
The film world loses another legend.
