Hi.

I was wondering a few things about this video, firstly the lighting.

I don't suppose for one second that they used the existing office block (or whatever) lighting. (What with the colour temp and brightness)

I'm guessing that they put 800watt lamps up in each light fixture? And I'm assuming they used a lighting control mixer?

Also the lighting temperature seems to burn white. What's the standard procedure for balancing to this? Is there a warm card you can use to do this?

The second thing was the "grass" scenes. They managed to get smooth shots out of some form of moving crane. What kind of a crane allows you to do this?

Jake Polonsky was the DP on this and he talked about it briefly recently on CML so head over there and do a search and im sure you'll find your answer.
That looks like a wire rig at the end of the video not a crane shot.

Wow ok.. I didn't even know those wire rigs existed..

How much do you think a wire rig would cost to rent for a day?

I searched on the CML and funnily enough found the original post by Jake Polonsky asking everyone else where he could find such a system..

Why is it so hard to believe it was the practical lighting? With 500 ASA film it's easy to get that kind of an exposure, even with anamorphic lenses (where they might have shot at a higher stop than you would with spherical lenses). I don't know what they actually did but it's not inconceivable to do it all practically, switching at the breaker box.

Since there were no other visible light sources it's easy to color-correct the image to white. With film you would simply shoot a gray card under the ambient lighting and have the colorist set up to that, with video you would simply white balance under the existing lighting. With film sometimes it helps to use a CC magenta filter to even out the spectrum a little bit, but it's not necessary. You can do the same with video or use the camera's color matrix to boost the magenta saturation a little.

Those rigs have been around for a while. Various companies specialise in them. There was a nice sidebar article about the rig used for the Alleyway fight in Minority Report in whatever AC covered it. Worth having a look at it. Check out www.camerarevolution.com to give you an idea of what their particular setup is like. Most operate in a similar fashion.
