I'll be spending some time in LA on my way to & from Mexico over Dec/Jan.
Would appreciate recommendations on what people think are the best cinemas in LA to view some films. Perhaps they are in a nice building, or have good equipment & project everything in focus. I'd also like to go somewhere that shows classic cinema, e.g. foreign, film noir etc.
I'll be staying in Santa Monica.
Thanks.

Lots of good ones. The Arclight in Hollywood is pretty state-of-art. Also in Hollywood is Mann's Chinese (the big theater, not the adjacent multiplex). Lots of art house/revival; American Cinemateque shows revival and limited runs and the Egyptian in Hollywood and the Aero in Santa Monica, the Nuart and any of the Laemmle's run art-house films. Many more I'm sure others will contribute...

I always try to see something at the Arclight when I'm in LA - Mr. Nash and I enjoyed Beowulf there recently.

This place isn't bad either.

Look for what's on at the Universal City Imax too

I have to say the Arclight as well. If only British cinemas were that good....

I don't think there's anything of that standard anywhere in the UK, is there?

If you're staying in Santa Monica you need to know that it's almost impossible to drive east (to Hollywood and the ArcLight, etc.) in the early evening. That is, anytime from 3 pm to 7-8 pm. Traffic is a nightmare. Close to Santa Monica are the (excellent) cinemas mentioned already.

But there's also the new Landmark that opened this summer : http://www.landmarkt...TheLandmark.htm

A good source for films, times, places, and reviews is the LA Weekly that comes out each Thursday: http://www.laweekly.com/film+tv/

Plan a bit ahead and the driving won't be too bad; just remember it's the worst from 3 pm to 7-8 pm and heading west to east or south to north......
