this may be a dumb idea, but i thought i'd see if anyone knew if it were possible to use lenses for a late 60's leica M4 on an aaton with a pl mount, using an adaptor. i have a wide angle 1:2/35, a midrange f=5cm, and a telephoto 1:2/90. i believe they are bayonet mount lenses, and i think i am giving the proper number id's. any advice?

Sorry, won't work. The Leica mount is shallower than the PL mount, so any adapter would put the lens too far out from the camera, making it a macro lens only, if it ewven focused at all.

If you still want to do it, Les Bosher in the UK should be able to make such an adapter mount.

If you could engineer a solution, they would make a pretty sweet set of fast, lightweight primes.

The flange focus for a Leica M mount is 28.something mm, a PL mount is 52mm.

A tele extender adapter would eliminate the point of using the fast Leica M lenses.

Though Aaton used to have a LeicaR=>Aaton mt. adapter.

Even if you could figure out a way to recess the M mount inside the PL mount to achieve the proper FFD, wouldn't the lens would hit the mirror shutter?

For those who may not know, the Leica M series lenses are designed for rangefinder cameras which don't require the extra space between the rear element and the film plane to clear the mirror shutter of SLRs, one reason why the M series lenses can be so small and so fast, compared to the R series.

Yeah, probably.
