Hello,

I am interested in projecting some 16mm protected prints in a public festival-like forum. What are the legal constraints? As I understand it, personal use is one matter, and public display could be in violation of copyright laws. If no money changes hands (free event), are there any legal issues? If so, how difficult is it to obtain permission for such use?

Thanks.

Depends on the situation, whether the distributor will care.

Is it for educational purposes, just to show, or are you using it as a hook to promote something else that you have going on.

There's a weird film community company here that has monthly showings of low budg features to give their members some incentive. I doubt they're getting clearance for these screenings, and it's definitely a way of theirs to lure in potential investors.

Either way, so long as it goes unnoticed you're fine. And if they find out somehow, the most you'll get is a warning to cease and desist.
