Hey guys,

I'm working on a small 16mm student shoot and have an extremely tight budget. I was wondering if it was a good idea to record int. and ext. location sound using just a boom, shotgun mic, and Minidisc recorder. Could this yield good results?

Does anyone have any tips for good, low budget location sound?

Best,

nick

I would advise against using a minidisc recorder. They use a compression algorithm to save disc space. That could become an issue if you have to do a lot of sound post production.

Better to use one of the modern flash, hard disk, etc. recorders and record uncompressed audio files. Another option is a laptop with a quality external soundcard like a Creative Extigy or one of the M-Audio cards. Using those systems you can import your audio as computer files directly into a program like Pro Tools. If you go with a laptop you can buy Pro Tools bundled with the card for pretty cheap $$$. Markertek has Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini's bundled with Pro Tools 7LE and a bunch of plugins for $299. http://www.markertek...I...earch=0

I recall on a short I did w/o a recorder, they went directly into a macbook pro with soundtrack. I'm not sure exactly what that means in terms of, ya know, having to do post work, but it worked out pretty well from what I hear for them.
Make sure you label your files properly, though (i.e. scene 1 shot 1 take 1) else it can be confusing as hell in post.
