This is probably a dumb question, but wanted to find out first. I was going to order a light with a maximum output rating of 500w. What's going to happen if I put a bulb higher than 500w in there? Fire? Blown fuse? Blown bulb?

Assuming you can fit a higher-wattage bulb into the unit (using the same base/pin configuration), you run the risk of overheating the unit resulting in melted components and potentially a short and/or fire.
