has anyone every heard the phrase "New York side of the camera/body"?
care to enlighten me?

Yes, I've heard it quite often. It's also referred to as the "dumb side". It's just the right side of the camera.

In NY, a lot of ACs work on the non-operator side of the camera. Usually because NY location shoots always seem to happen in the most, cramped, tiny spaces with prime lenses on cameras rigged as tiny as possible, so the AC gets very intimate with the Operator. In LA the joke is that no camera goes out on anything but an O'Connor 2575 or gear head and an Optimo 24-290. There's all the space in the world with that rig!
