Hi-

It adjusts the pitch of the pulldown (you dial it back and forth while the camera is running) so that the filmstock runs through the camera smoother and more quietly. Smooth is good (especially if you're shooting hi-speed) quiet doesn't really matter that much if you're already shooting with a 435! :)

Film can contract and expand in different humidity and temperature comditions. That will cause the perforations to be slightly different distances apart from factory spec. Pitch adjustment adjusts the movement to compensate for this.

The way to determine which setting to use is to roll a few feet and turn the pitch adjustment knob until it is at the quietest setting. There's no set pitch for different conditions that always works. You have to waste a few feet and go by that.
