I am in pre-production on a noir short. I have not really shot anything in black and white and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or advice for light set ups, fog, etc. Any stories or anything will help. Thanks a lot.

Hard light, venetian blind cookie and deep focus. Those are what immediately come to mind.

I'm not sure what you're looking for. By nature of calling it a "noir" short you've already decided most of the lighting style already.

Watch:

The Maltese Falcon
Casa Blanca
The Third Man

I am sure there will be many more suggestions.. these are my first four..

Oh please don't go down the venetian blinds route, it's so, oh so gimmicky.
Try to do something new with it instead, watch some old noir and try to develop it.

I think the mindset for that type of lighting is to allow the viewer to see but not see too much and to be lit while seeming dark. The rest hinges on how creative you want to be with it and exactly what the script and director need from you.
