Les Zellan, THE Chairman of Cooke, sent me a NICE email back saying they could do only their lenses because of the complexity of such a job. Zeiss sent back a CURT email saying they don't do other manufacturers' lenses. Who took over the Nikon production? Cosina makes them. Who is the distributor now?

Oh, well. Anyone know a nice cutter with the lens design software? It's all done in the computer, you know. I've downloaded freeware that does it. I just don't happen to know what numbers to plug into it. Well, there's that thing about having an engineering degree, ten years of experience or more and a lens manufacturing shop to do it all in. Other than that, I'm completely good to do it myself.

You might ask the astronomy departments at nearby universities. 40+ years ago, UCLA used to have in-house lens grinding. They were set up in the basement of a big concrete building to get as vibration-free as possible. I talked to a guy there who was making aspherical correction plates. Or, they may know a place to outsource lens work.

Thanks, John. Much appreciated. If this works and is reasonable in cost, lots of folks might enjoy the benefits. It will take a proper engineer to see if it can be done without unforeseen-insurmountables.
