I'm curious to know what films and/or DP's have used lenses to their best capabilities. I love what Alwin Kuchler did in Sunshine. The use of flares was so precise and driven. I've never seen the lens become so involved like that in a story. I'd like to check out more films like that so if you know of any that stand out, can you name a few?

Thanks.

A lot of movies have some interesting choices in that dept. A few that come to mind:

The Shining stands out in my mind as a very wide movie, in a good way. It emphasizes how big that place is and how lonely it feels with so few people in it.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford did some beautiful things with tilt-shift lenses and I think some very old lenses. A few times the background had a swirly effect like a petzval portrait lens when it's used past its coverage limit.

The Bourne movies have a very long lens feel a lot of the time, like the audience is way back watching through binoculars.

For flares, I'd look at Punch Drunk Love. I love the way they use the anamorphics in that film.
