Can someone explain the meaning of Single Phase and Three Phase systems. Was on set and the gaffer was talking to the studio owner about it and their wiring system. I looked it up in Box's book but I really don't fully understand his explanation.

it is fairly simple.

Three phase has 5 wires. Three hot 120 volt wires also called legs or phases(color coded red, blue, and black). It also has 1 neutral (color coded white) and 1 ground (color green). If you take a voltage meter and read a hot to hot you'll get 208 volts.

Single phase has 4 wires. Two hot 120 volt wires also called legs or phases(color coded red, blue, and sometimes one is black). It also has 1 neutral (color coded white) and 1 ground (color green). If you take a voltage meter and read a hot to hot you'll get 240 volts.

Best
